Q: Today, we have the pleasure of speaking with acclaimed author Steven Rowley, whose novels have captivated readers with their emotional depth and engaging storytelling. Thank you for joining us, Steven.
Steven Rowley: Thank you for having me. It’s a pleasure to be here.
Q: Your debut novel, “Lily and the Octopus,” received widespread critical acclaim and touched the hearts of readers around the world. Can you tell us a little about the inspiration behind the story and what drove you to write it?
Steven Rowley: “Lily and the Octopus” was inspired by my own experiences and the bond I shared with my beloved dachshund, Lily. When she was diagnosed with a brain tumor, I found myself grappling with the inevitable loss and the complex emotions that come with it. Writing became a way for me to navigate that journey and pay tribute to the unconditional love we shared. The novel combines elements of fantasy and reality, exploring themes of love, loss, and the power of the human-animal bond.
Q: Your latest novel, “The Editor,” delves into the fascinating world of book editing and explores the complexities of family relationships. Can you give us some insights into the inspiration behind this novel and your personal connection to the story?
Steven Rowley: “The Editor” draws inspiration from my own experiences working as an editor in the film industry. It also explores the intricate dynamics of family relationships, particularly the complex bond between a writer and his editor. The story was inspired by my own relationship with my mother and the challenges we faced as I came to terms with my identity as a gay man. Writing this novel allowed me to explore themes of acceptance, forgiveness, and the power of storytelling to heal and transform.
Q: Your novels often touch on themes of love, loss, and the human condition. What draws you to these themes, and how do you approach tackling them in your writing?
Steven Rowley: I believe that exploring the depths of the human experience is at the core of storytelling. Love and loss are universal emotions that we all grapple with at some point in our lives. By delving into these themes, I aim to connect with readers on an emotional level and evoke empathy and understanding. I approach these topics with honesty and vulnerability, drawing from my own personal experiences and observations of the world around me.
Q: Your writing has been praised for its emotional resonance and authentic character development. Can you share any insights into your writing process and how you bring your characters to life?
Steven Rowley: For me, the writing process is a journey of discovery. I begin with an idea or a character that captivates me, and then I allow the story to unfold organically. I spend a lot of time getting to know my characters, understanding their motivations, and delving into their emotional landscapes. I strive to create multidimensional characters with flaws, vulnerabilities, and relatable human experiences. Through this process, they come alive on the page, and I hope readers can connect with them in a meaningful way.
Q: As an accomplished author, what advice do you have for aspiring writers who are looking to embark on their own writing journeys?
Steven Rowley: My advice would be to write from a place of authenticity and passion. Find your unique voice and tell the stories that resonate with you deeply. Writing can be a challenging and solitary endeavor, so surround yourself with a supportive community of fellow writers or mentors who can provide guidance and feedback. Embrace the rewriting process, as that is where the true magic often happens. And most importantly, never lose sight of why you started writing in the first place—to share stories and connect with readers.
