Whether she was belting out the soulful anthems of her youth or rocking out with the big band at age 60, Tina Turner was a force to be reckoned with. Dubbed the Queen of Rock n Roll, the star behind hits like The Best and What’s Love Got To Do With It forged a legacy that spanned decades, enduring a difficult childhood and abusive relationship with her ex-husband Ike.
But her strength in the face of adversity made the indomitable icon so memorable. A recent HBO documentary titled Tina didn’t shy away from the darker aspects of her life, including years of abuse, a health crisis (including a kidney transplant), and the loss of her son. And yet, through it all, she stood up for one thing: herself.
Celebrities and fans have paid tribute to the “Queen of Rock’ n Roll” since her death at 83. Former US President Obama remembered the late icon as a “raw, powerful and unstoppable” star who was a “survivor” and a role model to women worldwide. He added that she was a woman who “owned her pain and trauma, used it to help heal herself and others, and carved out a space in the world for herself?”
Beyonce also took to social media to pay her respects, writing that she will never forget the late singer as an inspiration and someone she called a “wonderful friend.” The 41-year-old star posted a photograph of her and Turner with the caption: “My favorite human. You were the epitome of passion & power, and I will miss you every day. You taught me to love myself and be fearless.”
Oprah Winfrey paid her homage to Turner, describing her as a “shining example of strength, courage, grace, and beauty.” She added: “Thank you for your many gifts to this world. Your love and your light will be with us forever.”
And musician Flea, a Red Hot Chili Peppers member, recalled how Turner was a “true rocker” with an “infinite energy.” “She was a dynamo. The most profoundly sexy woman. She was a true rocker, the greatest performer. She was a survivor and a badass. There will never be another one like you,” he said.
