HYROX Functional Fitness Race Takes Off Worldwide

HYROX-designed functional gym work is quickly growing out of the gym environment and is becoming a major part of global fitness. The competition format s a test of strength endurance speed and stamina in a single event that combines running with high-intensity functional training exercises. Originally held in Hamburg Germany in 2017, it has since become a fitness craze that has gained a following of professionals working out alongside people of all levels in the gym.

The size of that increase has been more starkly illustrated in 2026. Based on Reuters, ‘HYROX now pulls in over 1.5 million athletes internationally every year, with events in over 100 cities worldwide in over 35 countries.’ The 2026 World Championships in Stockholm with competitors from 101 countries demonstrates just how fast the format has moved out of Europe.

HYROX’ basic race is fairly simple but intense. The race involves eight x 1 km running sections with each section then switching to a functional workout. These workouts include movements like burpee broad jumps, sled pushes, farmer’s carries, sandbag lunge, sled pulls, wall balls and rowing. This makes for a race that constantly pushes racers to punch on at full speed on the run and then rapidly switch into a strength movement.

Compared to many other more conventional endurance events, HYROX has been developed to cater to a very inclusive and diverse demographic group. There are no qualification standards in place to compete in the main race, and there are multiple divisions for participants to enter in the format and level that best suits their current ability: Singles Pro Doubles and Relay.

The feedback that the format is accessible is also one of the reasons for its popularity. A participant does not need to be a world class running athlete or weight lifter, but as long as they are prepared, most people can take part, with a good mix of running, weight lifting and functional movements for preparation. The same course enables athletes to gauge their performance against others elsewhere.

Scientists have started studying this growth. In Research Quarterly for Exercise and Sport, a team studied 145 HYROX races during five seasons 2023/24 for 278,063 racers. They documented significant growth in many divisions and others in 22 host countries and called this events an emerging worldwide fitness movement.

Commercially, the participating movement has stimulated a commercial aspect which is expanding. HYROX has secured deals with large sports and fitness companies. Also, fitness facilities are including HYROX-style sessions in their programme more and more. In September the Financial Times reported that an investment consortium, headed by L Catterton, purchased HYROX for an estimated worth of 600 million. This indicates the increased commercial interest invested in the fitness-racing company.

The race entry fee is just one component of the business model. There are event tickets, licenses and brand partnerships that are generating income for HYROX, a community of now over 100,000 that is opening up new revenue streams in training clothing equipment and fitness travel. The company is also looking at further entertainment / media opportunities in building a larger lifestyle brand.
